Investigators continue to look into what happened Tuesday when a Jan-Care Ambulance Services vehicle collided with a flat bed semi truck Tuesday morning on Interstate 79. The collision occurred near Weston, West Virginia. A 26-year-old EMT who was riding as a passenger in the ambulance suffered severe injuries and dies at Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Weston. A spokesperson for the ambulance company says that a paramedic on board also suffered personal injuries in the ambulance and truck accident. The paramedic reportedly was treated for injuries and later released from the hospital.
Two people were riding in the truck. A spokesperson for the Lewis County Sheriff's Department says that neither the driver nor the passenger in the flat bed semi suffered injuries in the interstate traffic accident. The ambulance was returning to the station after responding to an emergency call when the fatal accident occurred. The ambulance company says that no patient was in the ambulance when the truck and emergency vehicle collided.
Authorities have not released any details about what may have led to the fatal accident, according to WBOY News. Authorities closed the interstate for roughly two hours in the aftermath of the wreck. Investigators pored over the scene. Authorities brought in an accident reconstructionist to review the area surrounding the scene of the crash.
Authorities may often open an investigation into a motor vehicle accident. It is important to note that a government investigation may not answer all of the questions that should be asked after a wreck. Law enforcement does a good job in looking into the facts, but the interests of the government in investigating a crash may not address all of the issues that an accident victim, or the family of an accident victim, may need to know.
It is important for victims or their families to consider seeking legal advice as soon as possible after a wreck, while memories and evidence remain fresh for any potential independent investigation.
